Negative Impacts
Trolling/Cyber-trollying:
When an individual/company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels.
Number of social media platforms available has led to a proliferation in Trolly and Cyber-trolling.
Ariana Grande e.g:
-Followed death of her ex boyfriend, Mac Miller
-She was trolled online
-Disabled her IG comments for some time.
Cyber-bullying:
When an individual is targeted online through hurtful or threatening messages, generally online.
42% of youth report being bullied online.
Over 81% of teens admit that bullying is easier to get away with online.
Only 1 in 5 cyber bullying is reported to authorities.
Filters and Photoshop:
-Lot of controversy, led to mass debates surrounding body images
-Resulted in an increase in depression and self harming
-Kardashians and Jenners are real life examples of this
-Resulted in an un-realistic body image
-Seen a rise in negative body images
Backlashes Against Brands:
-Social media has enabled consumers to voice their own opinions on a range of issues.
-These include big businesses, whose marketing and/or products they object to.
-An example of this is Kim Kardashian's recent 'Kimono' line of underwear.
-One way brands receive negative comments is through memes.
-A meme is an idea, behaviour or style that spreads via social networks from person to person and that usually involves a sarcastic or critical statement. This is known as parodying.
-With enough shares and likes, campaigns might go viral, attracting hundreds of thousands of responses.
Imperialism:
-One criticism of globalisation is that it leads to imperialism.
-The way in which predominately Western popular culture is promoted to less developed countries.
-This may, in turn, lead to the gradual erosion of those less developed countries.
-Disney is seen as an example of this.
